Arterial hypertension explained

It often causes no noticeable symptoms, yet over time it can strain blood vessels, the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes. A single raised reading does not by itself establish the diagnosis because pain, stress, caffeine, activity, and measurement technique can temporarily alter blood pressure.

The upper reading reflects arterial pressure when the heart contracts, while the lower reading reflects pressure as it relaxes. Clinicians confirm a pattern using properly taken clinic readings, home monitoring, or a portable monitor worn during normal daily activity and sleep.

Evaluation may consider family history, smoking, body weight, sleep apnoea, kidney disease, diabetes, cholesterol, medicines, and alcohol intake. Blood and urine tests, an electrocardiogram, and sometimes an eye examination help look for contributing conditions or effects on organs.

Use a validated upper-arm monitor with a cuff that fits. Sit quietly with back and feet supported, keep the arm at heart level, avoid talking, and record readings as your clinician advises. Bring the monitor and record to an appointment if results vary widely.

Regular activity, less salt, stopping smoking, moderating alcohol, restorative sleep, and weight management where relevant can lower cardiovascular strain. If medicine is prescribed, take it consistently and report dizziness, swelling, cough, or other suspected effects instead of changing the dose alone.

Call emergency services if a very high reading occurs with chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness or numbness, facial droop, trouble speaking, confusion, collapse, a new severe headache, or sudden vision change. Symptoms drive the urgency because they may indicate acute organ injury.

If a home reading is unexpectedly high but you feel well, sit quietly, check the cuff position, and repeat it after resting. Contact a clinician promptly if it remains markedly above your personal action threshold; do not take extra tablets unless your treatment plan specifically directs this.

Set an individual target with your clinician, including when and how to measure at home and which readings should prompt contact. The review can also cover kidney tests, urine checks, cholesterol assessment, possible sleep-apnoea evaluation, and the timing of treatment follow-up.
