Transplanted shafts often shed during early recovery even when follicles remain in place; visible regrowth follows the follicles' biological cycle rather than appearing immediately. Hair texture and calibre can continue to change as new shafts mature.

Coverage is influenced by the contrast between hair and scalp, shaft thickness, curl, the size of the thinning zone and the available donor reserve. A transplant redistributes follicles rather than returning the scalp to its earlier density. Untreated native hair may continue to thin around transplanted areas.

Follow the surgical team's directions for washing, sleep position, physical activity and when to resume hair products. Avoid scratching, rubbing or pulling crusts from the recipient area. Keep the scalp protected as directed and attend follow-up appointments even when healing seems straightforward.

Ask whether the underlying diagnosis is stable and whether non-surgical management is suitable for remaining native hair. Standardised photographs can track change more reliably than memory. Use the same lighting, camera angle, hair length and styling, and include donor as well as recipient views.

Promptly report increasing pain, pus, fever, spreading redness, persistent bleeding, a bad smell or rapidly worsening swelling. These are not matters to assess through cosmetic progress photos alone. Breathing difficulty or sudden widespread swelling calls for urgent medical care.

Arrange a later assessment if donor thinning becomes conspicuous, scars grow raised, the hairline direction appears abnormal or growth is unexpectedly sparse after the maturation period discussed with your surgeon. Examination can identify whether healing, ongoing loss or limited graft growth is contributing.

Ask how the diagnosis, donor density and future loss shape the proposed result. Clarify the planned distribution of grafts, the visual density that is realistic, how the donor area will be protected and whether another procedure might be considered later. Request comparable patient photographs taken under consistent conditions and ask who manages postoperative concerns.
