Understanding ARTAS hair before-and-after results

Useful comparisons show the donor and recipient areas under similar lighting, hair length, styling, angle and scalp dryness. Photos taken with longer hair, concealing fibres or different lighting may make density changes difficult to judge.

Immediately after robotic-assisted FUE, the recipient area may look red and dotted, while the donor area has many small extraction sites. Crusting and temporary swelling may follow. Transplanted hairs can shed during early recovery even when follicles remain in place; visible new growth then develops gradually over subsequent months. Texture and coverage can continue to mature as the hair lengthens.

An after photo reflects more than the robot. Hairline design, the direction and spacing of placed grafts, follicle survival, the contrast between hair and skin, curl, shaft thickness and styling all affect the visible outcome. Native hair outside the transplanted zone may also keep thinning.

Ask when each after image was taken and whether the patient had additional procedures or used hair-loss treatment. Look for cases with a similar starting pattern, hair calibre, curl and donor density rather than choosing only a preferred hairline. Confirm that the images show both the transplanted region and donor area.

For your own progress, photograph the same views in consistent lighting without styling products. Follow washing and activity instructions, avoid scratching or removing crusts, and keep scheduled follow-ups. Report unexpected changes instead of comparing a healing scalp with someone else's finished result.

Call the treating team if redness spreads, discomfort becomes more intense, swelling worsens, bleeding persists despite the instructed pressure, or the scalp develops pus, an unpleasant smell or increasing warmth. Fever or a new widespread rash also deserves prompt assessment. Breathing difficulty, fainting or rapidly developing facial swelling requires urgent care.

Ask the clinician to explain what improvement is realistic with your donor supply, which area receives priority, how the hairline accounts for future loss and how donor extraction will be distributed. Clarify who designs and places the grafts, what normal shedding looks like, when progress photographs are useful and whom to contact outside routine appointments.
