Understanding a possible yeast infection on the arm

Candida can overgrow where skin stays warm and damp, including the armpit or a skin fold near the arm. The rash may be red or darker than surrounding skin, itchy, sore and sharply edged, sometimes with smaller spots close to the main patch. These findings are not unique to yeast. Contact dermatitis, eczema, bacterial infection, ringworm and friction can produce a similar appearance. An arm rash is a skin problem and is distinct from vaginal thrush, even though Candida can be involved in both.

Gently wash the area, pat it completely dry and change damp clothing promptly. Loose, breathable fabric can reduce rubbing and trapped moisture. Avoid fragranced deodorants or new skin products on the rash until the cause is clearer, and do not share towels. A pharmacist or clinician can help decide whether an antifungal is appropriate and which formulation suits the site. Use treatment for the full instructed course. Steroid cream used alone can alter the appearance of some fungal rashes or allow them to worsen, so check before applying it to an undiagnosed patch.

Book an assessment if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returns, has not improved with correctly used treatment, or if you are unsure what it is. Earlier advice is sensible if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, broken skin or a recent course of antibiotics. Seek urgent care if redness expands quickly, the area becomes hot and very painful, pus appears, red streaks travel up the arm, or you feel feverish or acutely unwell. Facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a widespread blistering rash requires emergency help.

Describe when the rash began, how it has changed, which products touch the area and everything you have already applied. Ask whether its location and appearance fit Candida or another diagnosis, whether a skin sample is needed, and how long treatment should continue. If episodes recur, discuss moisture, friction, medicines and health conditions that could be contributing.
