Arm pain and cervical radiculopathy

Short answer
Cervical radiculopathy can cause arm pain when a nerve root in the neck becomes irritated or compressed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Pain may run from the neck or shoulder into the arm.
- Associated symptoms
- Tingling, numbness, or weakness can accompany pain.
- Prompt review
- New or worsening weakness needs timely assessment.
The short answer
Pain may travel from the neck or shoulder into the arm and can occur with tingling, numbness, or weakness. The pattern depends on which nerve root is affected, so an examination is useful when symptoms persist or interfere with normal activity.
How a neck nerve causes arm symptoms
Nerves leave the spinal cord through small openings between the neck bones and then supply the shoulder, arm, and hand. Disc irritation, age-related narrowing, or inflammation around one of these openings can disturb a nerve root. Cervical radiculopathy commonly presents with radiating arm pain and may also present with altered sensation or reduced strength.
The discomfort can feel sharp, burning, electric, or aching. Neck movement may change it, but symptoms can also be felt mainly in the arm. Similar complaints may arise from the shoulder, elbow, wrist, or a peripheral nerve, so location alone does not establish the cause.
What you can do now
Keep the neck and arm gently active within a comfortable range, and avoid repeatedly holding the neck in a position that clearly sends pain farther down the arm. Short changes of posture are often more manageable than prolonged bed rest or rigid guarding.
A clinician or physiotherapist can check neck movement, reflexes, sensation, grip, and muscle strength, then tailor exercises to the findings. Mention any hand clumsiness, dropping objects, previous neck injury, fever, or unexplained illness. Do not force neck stretches or use forceful manipulation when symptoms are worsening or weakness is present.
When medical assessment is needed
Arrange a clinical assessment if pain is persistent, recurrent, disturbing sleep, or limiting work and daily tasks. Seek prompt care for new or increasing arm or hand weakness, marked loss of sensation, severe pain after an injury, or symptoms affecting both arms.
Emergency assessment is appropriate if arm symptoms occur with new difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or sudden chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or nausea. These features require evaluation for causes beyond a routine irritated neck nerve.
Useful questions for your appointment
Ask which examination findings point to a neck nerve rather than the shoulder, elbow, or wrist; whether weakness changes the urgency; which movements are suitable; and what change in symptoms should trigger reassessment. You can also ask whether imaging would alter management, because it is not required for every episode.

Questions people ask
Can cervical radiculopathy cause pain without neck pain?
Yes. Cervical radiculopathy may present mainly as shoulder, arm, or hand symptoms even when neck discomfort is mild or absent.
Should I stop using my arm?
Complete rest is rarely the goal. Use the arm within tolerable limits, reduce movements that clearly spread symptoms, and seek guidance if pain or weakness is progressing.
Is a scan always needed?
Not necessarily. Examination findings and the course of symptoms help determine whether imaging is likely to change care.
