Arm liposuction compression garments: what to know

Your surgical team should specify the garment style, when to wear it, and when it may be removed for washing or skin checks. Those instructions take priority because the treated area and healing plan differ between people.

A postoperative garment applies steady external pressure over the treated tissue. It can support the arm while early swelling and bruising settle, and it reduces rubbing from ordinary clothing. Compression should be smooth rather than concentrated at a cuff, seam, or folded edge. A garment that rolls or digs into the armpit can create a pressure point instead of useful support.

Put the garment on exactly as demonstrated, with dry fabric lying flat and no wrinkles. Check the hand, elbow crease, upper-arm edge, and skin beneath accessible seams. Fingers should retain their usual colour and warmth, and you should be able to move them comfortably. Follow the care label when washing; having a clean, fully dry garment helps protect healing skin. Do not add tighter sleeves, pads, or shapewear unless your care team approves them.

Remove or loosen the garment if your clinician has told you it is safe to do so, and seek prompt advice for new numbness, tingling, a cold or discoloured hand, blistering, broken skin, rapidly increasing swelling, or pain that becomes worse under the garment. Urgent medical assessment is needed for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or severe swelling accompanied by breathing difficulty.

Ask which garment model and size match your procedure, whether it should cover the elbow or armpit, and how often the skin should be inspected. Clarify what to do if swelling changes the fit, when washing and showering are allowed, and who can reassess the garment if an edge rubs the incision.
