Arm Burn Scars: Care and Treatment

How the structures involved in Burn Scars differ from normal

Short answer

An arm burn scar can change colour, thickness, sensation and movement, so treatment should match both its appearance and its functional effect.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Scars continue to remodel after the wound closes. Raised tissue may itch or feel tight, while deeper injury can tether skin and restrict an elbow, wrist, or shoulder.

How a burn scar may behave

A flat scar mainly differs in colour or texture. A hypertrophic scar is raised but remains within the original injury, whereas a contracture pulls the skin and can limit joint motion. Altered nerves may cause numbness, tingling, sensitivity, or persistent itch.

Treatment choice depends on whether the skin is fully healed, how mature the scar is, its depth and location, and whether function is affected. Cosmetic colour change and mechanical tightness require different plans.

Protecting the scar and improving function

Once the wound has fully closed, moisturising can reduce dryness and clinician-guided massage may improve comfort. Protect the area from strong sunlight with clothing and suitable sunscreen because new scars can develop persistent colour contrast.

A burn or scar specialist may recommend silicone, pressure therapy, physiotherapy, injections, fractional laser treatment, or surgery. Stretching and splinting are especially relevant when tissue crosses a joint; do not force a movement that causes skin breakdown.

When to get medical help

Seek prompt care if the scar opens, drains, becomes increasingly red or hot, or is accompanied by fever. New loss of movement, worsening swelling, severe pain, or fingers becoming pale, blue, cold, or numb also needs urgent assessment.

Book a specialist review if tightness is steadily limiting work, dressing, exercise, or sleep, or if itch and sensitivity remain difficult to control.

Planning a scar consultation

Ask whether the scar is still active, how range of motion should be measured, and whether therapy is needed before a procedure. Clarify which feature each proposed treatment targets, the possibility of pigment change, wound-care needs, and how recovery could affect use of the arm.

Questions people ask

Can an old arm burn scar still be treated?

Yes. Mature scars may still benefit from treatment, but the appropriate option depends on whether the main issue is colour, thickness, sensitivity, tethering, or restricted movement.

Should I massage a burn scar?

Massage may be advised after the wound is completely closed, but pressure and technique should be confirmed with the treating team, especially if the skin is fragile or the scar crosses a joint.

When is surgery considered?

Surgery may be considered when a contracture restricts function, tissue is unstable, or a scar cannot be adequately improved with less invasive care. It creates another healing wound, so benefits and tradeoffs need careful discussion.
