What should you know about argan oil for hair breakage?

Breakage occurs along the hair shaft, leaving shorter pieces, frayed ends and uneven length. Heat styling, bleaching, chemical straightening, forceful detangling, tight hairstyles and repeated rubbing can weaken the shaft. Argan oil coats the surface and may improve slip, which limits tugging during grooming.

Oil does not fuse a split end back together or restore hair that has already snapped. Breakage can resemble shedding from the root, so notice whether fallen strands are short fragments or full-length hairs. Scalp scale, tender bumps, circular patches or progressive thinning points to a problem beyond simple dryness.

Rub a small amount of plain argan oil between the palms and smooth it over damp mid-lengths and ends. Begin sparingly, especially on fine hair, and keep it off an irritated scalp. Stop if you develop itching, redness or bumps. Oil blends containing fragrance or essential oils may be more irritating than a simple product.

Pair lubrication with lower heat, wider spacing between chemical processes, gentle detangling from the ends upward and looser hairstyles. Trim severely split ends because topical products cannot rejoin the separated shaft. If a style pulls at the hairline, changing it early reduces continued tension; traction alopecia presents with thinning in repeatedly pulled areas.

Arrange a dermatology review for sudden or extensive breakage, visible bald patches, scalp pain, pus, marked scaling, or hair loss that continues despite gentler care. Scalp ringworm can present with scaly patches, broken hairs and areas of hair loss, and it requires medical treatment rather than cosmetic oil.

Prompt assessment is warranted when redness or swelling spreads, tender boggy swelling develops, or fever accompanies scalp symptoms. Also seek help if thinning is advancing along a tightly styled hairline or the affected skin looks smooth and shiny.

Ask whether the pattern represents shaft breakage, root shedding or both, and whether scalp examination or testing is needed. Bring a list of chemical treatments, styling tools, hairstyles and hair products so the clinician can identify avoidable stress and check for an inflammatory, infectious or nutritional cause.
