Small, isolated bumps without increasing pain or spreading redness may reflect blocked or irritated follicles. Similar-looking bumps can also occur with folliculitis, contact irritation, or infection, so changes in the surrounding tattoo matter as much as the bumps themselves.

A heavy, shiny coating can keep the area overly moist and increase friction under clothing. Folliculitis often presents with tender or itchy follicle-centred bumps, while contact irritation may bring diffuse itching, burning, or a rash shaped like the product-covered area.

A fresh tattoo can normally feel tender and look mildly red early in healing. Redness that expands, pain that intensifies, increasing heat, pus, a bad smell, or feeling unwell is more concerning than a few stable whiteheads.

Wash your hands, then clean the tattoo gently according to the aftercare instructions you were given. Pat it dry with a clean disposable towel and avoid squeezing, picking, or scrubbing the bumps, which can injure healing skin and disturb pigment.

If the ointment was applied thickly, remove the excess gently and use only the light amount recommended by the tattoo professional or clinician. Avoid adding acne acids, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, fragranced products, or antibiotic creams to a fresh tattoo unless a clinician specifically recommends them. Choose loose, clean clothing and reduce rubbing and sweating over the area.

Contact a clinician promptly if redness spreads beyond the tattoo, swelling or pain increases, the skin becomes increasingly hot, or the area produces thick discharge or red streaks. Fever, chills, dizziness, or feeling generally unwell alongside a worsening tattoo needs urgent assessment.

Get urgent help for facial swelling, widespread hives, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. A clinician should also check bumps that persist, repeatedly refill with pus, or leave worsening crusts because treatment depends on whether the cause is irritation, folliculitis, or another problem.

Ask whether the bumps follow individual hairs or form a broader rash, whether the tattoo appears infected, and what bland moisturiser is appropriate at its current healing stage. Bring the ointment packaging and explain when the bumps appeared, how much product you used, and whether pain, heat, discharge, or fever followed.
