Loss of appetite as an appendicitis symptom

Inflammation and nausea can make food unappealing before or during the pain. Appetite loss by itself is nonspecific and occurs with many infections, digestive problems and mood disorders, so it cannot establish the cause.

Appendicitis may begin with vague discomfort near the centre of the abdomen, followed by pain that becomes stronger and more focused, often toward the lower right side. Nausea, vomiting, fever and tenderness with movement may appear alongside poor appetite.

Not everyone develops the same sequence. Young children, older adults and pregnant people may have pain in a different location or less obvious appetite changes, which is why a clinician assesses the whole presentation rather than one symptom.

Seek prompt medical advice when loss of appetite comes with abdominal pain that does not settle, is intensifying, or becomes localised. Write down when each symptom started and mention vomiting, bowel changes, urinary symptoms, fever and any possibility of pregnancy.

Do not force a meal when nausea or significant pain is present. Avoid laxatives and do not let pain relief or home remedies postpone assessment. If you are directed to urgent care, ask whether food or drink should be avoided in case imaging or a procedure is required.

Go to emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a firm or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, marked weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Fever with pronounced abdominal tenderness also warrants urgent evaluation.

Pain that suddenly eases and then spreads across the abdomen can indicate a serious complication. Seek help immediately rather than testing the appetite with food or waiting until the next day.

Ask what findings point toward appendicitis, whether blood, urine or imaging tests are needed, and when eating can safely resume. Also ask which symptom changes require a return to emergency care if the initial examination does not identify the cause.
