What should you know about appendicitis abdominal swelling?

Swelling alone cannot establish the cause. Clinicians consider where the pain began, whether it has moved, tenderness, appetite, nausea, bowel symptoms and fever, then examine the abdomen and arrange tests when needed.

Inflammation near the appendix can slow bowel movement and make the abdomen feel full or look distended. More marked distension with worsening pain can occur when bowel function is impaired or inflammation has spread, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

Gas, constipation, food intolerance and several abdominal or pelvic conditions can also cause swelling. Persistent enlargement may require assessment for fluid in the abdomen or an enlarged organ. The cause cannot be separated reliably by appearance or touch at home.

Arrange same-day medical assessment when new swelling occurs with steady or worsening abdominal pain, particularly pain that settles in the lower right abdomen. Note when symptoms began, whether you can pass stool or gas, and whether vomiting or fever is present.

Until assessed, avoid laxatives for unexplained severe pain and do not press repeatedly on the tender area. If surgery might be needed, the clinical team will tell you when to stop food and drink; do not delay urgent evaluation to prepare yourself.

Go to an emergency department for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, inability to pass stool or gas, or swelling that is increasing quickly. A temporary easing of intense pain followed by widespread abdominal pain also needs emergency evaluation.

Ask what the examination suggests, whether blood tests or imaging are needed, and whether the bowel appears affected. If appendicitis is suspected, ask how urgently treatment is required, what symptoms should trigger an immediate return and whom to contact if the swelling changes.
