What should you know about apex dexa scan?

DEXA uses low-dose X-rays to estimate bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and lower spine. The scan helps a clinician assess bone strength and decide whether monitoring, lifestyle measures, or treatment may be appropriate.

The scanner compares how two X-ray energy levels pass through bone and soft tissue. A report commonly includes a T-score, which compares bone density with that of a healthy young adult, and may include a Z-score, which compares it with people of a similar age and sex. A clinician interprets these values alongside fracture history, medicines, menopause status, and other health conditions.

A low result does not show the cause by itself. Early loss of ovarian function, long-term use of certain medicines, low body weight, and some hormonal or digestive conditions can influence bone health and may prompt further assessment.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions and mention any possibility of pregnancy before the examination. Tell staff about recent imaging that involved contrast material, and wear clothing without metal around the area being scanned if requested. During the test, you lie still on a padded table while the scanner arm passes over you; the scan is non-invasive.

Afterward, obtain the written report and discuss what the measurements mean for you. Follow-up may involve exercise and nutrition advice, investigation of contributing conditions, medicine, or a future comparison scan. Results from different machines may not be directly interchangeable, so mention where earlier scans were performed.

A routine DEXA appointment is not an emergency service. Seek prompt assessment after a fall if you have severe hip, back, or wrist pain, cannot bear weight, notice a limb deformity, or develop sudden back pain with new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Ask which sites were measured, whether the T-score or Z-score is most relevant to you, and whether previous images were suitable for comparison. You can also ask whether blood tests, medication review, strength and balance work, calcium or vitamin D advice, or treatment is indicated.
