It can resemble acne, eczema, or rosacea, but it needs a different care strategy. The rash may burn, sting, feel tight, or become flaky, and the narrow border directly beside the lips is often less affected.

Perioral dermatitis commonly presents with clusters of small, fairly uniform red or skin-coloured bumps around the mouth. It may also appear beside the nose or around the eyes, which is why clinicians may use the broader term periorificial dermatitis.

Topical corticosteroids can trigger or aggravate this condition, even if they briefly suppress redness. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, vision changes, severe eyelid swelling, rapidly spreading facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever with a painful rash, or blisters and peeling skin. These features are not the usual presentation of uncomplicated perioral dermatitis.
