Short answer

Anxiety can temporarily reduce appetite through stress-related nausea, tension, or digestive changes, but persistent poor intake should not be assumed to be anxiety alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pattern
Anxiety-related appetite changes may fluctuate with periods of heightened stress.
Priority
Regular fluid intake matters when nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea accompanies poor appetite.
Review trigger
Unintentional weight loss or persistent poor intake warrants medical review.

The short answer

The connection is more convincing when appetite falls during anxious periods and returns as the body settles. Infection, digestive illness, depression, medicines, pain, and other health problems can also reduce the desire to eat.

How stress can affect eating

The stress response can alter gut movement, tighten abdominal muscles, dry the mouth, and create nausea or an early sense of fullness. Worry may also occupy attention so completely that meals are delayed or forgotten. These effects can form a cycle: eating too little may bring weakness or shakiness that feels like more anxiety.

Loss of appetite alone cannot identify the cause. Gastroenteritis often presents with appetite loss alongside vomiting or diarrhoea, while gastritis or a peptic ulcer may present with upper abdominal discomfort, burning, or nausea. Depression may present with reduced appetite together with persistent low mood or loss of pleasure.

Keeping up fluids and nutrition

Choose small, regular portions that are easy to tolerate instead of waiting for a full appetite. Plain foods, soups, yoghurt, eggs, or smoothies may be manageable depending on your health and preferences. Sip fluids regularly; oral rehydration solution may be helpful after vomiting or diarrhoea when used as directed.

Eat in a calm setting, loosen tight clothing, and use slow breathing before the meal. Limit large amounts of caffeine because it can suppress appetite and worsen anxious sensations. Track food and fluid intake, nausea, bowel changes, pain, fever, mood, and recent medicine changes.

When poor appetite needs assessment

Book a medical review if appetite remains reduced, weight is falling without intention, swallowing is difficult, symptoms keep returning, or poor intake is affecting strength and daily activities. Also seek advice for persistent abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea, jaundice, or a major change in bowel habits.

Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, faint, become confused, vomit blood, pass black or bloody stool, or develop severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain. These signs can indicate dehydration or bleeding and should not be attributed to anxiety.

What to ask at your visit

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a digestive, infectious, mood-related, or medication cause; whether any examination or tests are appropriate; how to maintain nutrition with your medical history; and which changes would mean you need faster follow-up.
