Anxiety and lightheadedness

Short answer
Anxiety can cause lightheadedness by changing breathing and activating the stress response, but repeated or severe episodes need assessment for other causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First action
- Sit or lie down promptly to reduce the chance of falling.
- Helpful detail
- Describe faintness, spinning and imbalance separately.
- Driving
- Do not drive while lightheaded or when episodes are unpredictable.
Can anxiety make you lightheaded?
Overbreathing can lower carbon dioxide in the blood and lead to a faint, floaty feeling, tingling or blurred vision. Stress hormones may add a racing heartbeat, sweating and shakiness. These sensations are real even when anxiety contributes.
Lightheadedness is not the same as vertigo
Lightheadedness often feels as though you might faint, whereas vertigo feels like you or the surroundings are moving. Imbalance is another distinct sensation. Explaining which description fits, what you were doing and how suddenly it began helps guide assessment.
Other causes include dehydration, low blood glucose, anaemia, heat illness, medicine effects, changes in blood pressure, inner-ear disorders and heart rhythm problems. Anxiety may occur alongside any of these, so feeling worried during an episode does not identify its cause.
What to do when it happens
Sit or lie down to prevent a fall, loosen tight clothing and move away from heat. Breathe gently through the nose and allow a longer, unforced exhalation. Sip fluid if you can swallow safely and dehydration is possible; do not use paper-bag breathing.
Record the episode's onset, position, activity, meals, heat exposure, medicines and accompanying heartbeat, hearing or neurological symptoms. Arrange a clinical review if episodes return, arise with exertion, cause a fall or interfere with driving and everyday activity.
Red flags with lightheadedness
Call emergency services if lightheadedness comes with fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, a new irregular or very rapid heartbeat, sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness on one side, facial droop, difficulty speaking, confusion or loss of coordination.
Prompt assessment is also needed after significant bleeding, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, heat exposure with worsening illness, or an episode during exercise. Until the cause is clear, avoid driving, climbing or operating machinery when symptoms could recur.
Making the appointment useful
Ask whether your description suggests faintness, vertigo or imbalance; whether blood pressure, heart rhythm, blood tests or a medicine review are appropriate; and how to manage anxiety without overlooking physical triggers.

Questions people ask
Why does fast breathing make me lightheaded?
Breathing faster or deeper than your body needs can change blood carbon dioxide levels, causing faintness, tingling and visual disturbance. Gentle breathing may help, but concerning symptoms still need assessment.
Can I assume lightheadedness during panic is harmless?
No. Panic can cause lightheadedness, yet timing alone cannot exclude dehydration, low blood glucose, a heart rhythm problem or another medical cause.
What details should I track before seeing a doctor?
Note what the sensation felt like, its onset, your posture and activity, food and fluid intake, heat exposure, medicines, heartbeat changes, hearing symptoms and any weakness or speech difficulty.
