Short answer

Anxiety can cause tiredness through poor sleep, muscle tension and sustained alertness, but persistent fatigue deserves a broader health assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common connection
Worry and heightened alertness can disrupt restorative sleep.
Useful record
Track sleep, energy, activity, meals and associated symptoms.
Safety
Avoid driving when sleepiness affects alertness.

Can anxiety make you tired?

A person may feel mentally drained, physically heavy or unable to concentrate after prolonged worry. Anxiety can also make sleep lighter or more interrupted, even when total time in bed seems adequate.

How the symptoms can be connected

The body's threat response increases alertness and muscle tension. Maintaining that state consumes energy, while racing thoughts may delay sleep or cause early waking. Avoiding activity because of anxiety can then reduce stamina and reinforce fatigue.

Tiredness is not specific to anxiety. Anaemia, dehydration, infection, medicine effects, thyroid problems, low mood and disrupted breathing during sleep are among the other possibilities. The timing, associated symptoms and effect on daily life help a clinician narrow the cause.

Practical next steps

Keep a short record of sleep, caffeine, meals, activity, worry episodes and energy levels. A regular wake time, daylight exposure, gentle movement and scheduled wind-down period can support sleep and reduce the cycle of inactivity.

Arrange a GP appointment if fatigue persists, repeatedly returns or limits work, study, driving or self-care. Bring a medicine and supplement list. Assessment may include questions about sleep, mood, diet, bleeding, alcohol use and physical symptoms, followed by examination or targeted tests when indicated.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical help for tiredness accompanied by chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, new confusion, weakness affecting one side, or thoughts of harming yourself. These features require prompt assessment regardless of whether anxiety is present.

Contact a clinician soon if you have unexplained weight change, fever, persistent vomiting, black or bloody stools, unusually heavy bleeding, marked thirst, or worsening symptoms. Do not drive if sleepiness makes it hard to stay alert.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptom pattern suggests a sleep, mood, nutritional or medical cause; whether any medicine could contribute; what tests are appropriate; and which anxiety treatments fit your circumstances.

Questions people ask

Can anxiety make me tired even after sleeping?

Yes. Fragmented sleep, prolonged muscle tension and mental hyperalertness can leave sleep feeling unrefreshing. Ongoing fatigue should still be assessed for other causes.

Should I exercise when anxiety is making me tired?

Gentle, paced activity may support sleep and stamina. Start within your comfort level and stop for chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness or other concerning symptoms.

Could dehydration feel like anxiety-related fatigue?

Dehydration can cause low energy, thirst, headache and lightheadedness. Fluid needs vary, and persistent symptoms need assessment rather than being attributed to anxiety alone.
