Antihydral for hyperhidrosis: use and precautions

It is commonly discussed for sweaty palms or soles. Product formulations and instructions can vary by market, so check the active ingredient and follow the leaflet supplied with the exact product rather than copying another person's routine.

Antihydral products are associated with the topical ingredient methenamine. Applied to a limited area, the product is intended to suppress sweating at the skin surface. It does not address an underlying medical cause of generalised sweating and is not interchangeable with every prescription antiperspirant.

Hyperhidrosis may be focal, often affecting the hands, feet, or underarms, or more widespread. A clinician will use the pattern, timing, medication history, and other symptoms to decide whether local treatment is reasonable or whether an underlying trigger should be investigated.

Use a thin layer only on the site named in the product instructions, let it dry, and wash your hands afterward unless the palms are being treated. Do not apply it to broken, inflamed, freshly shaved, or infected skin. Avoid the eyes, mouth, genital area, and other sensitive sites; facial or underarm use needs specific professional guidance.

Watch for excessive dryness, cracking, yellow-brown discolouration, scaling, or thickened skin. These changes can reduce grip or make walking uncomfortable. Pause use and seek advice rather than increasing the amount when sweating persists. Moisturiser may help dryness, but the timing should be separated from the treatment according to professional or leaflet directions.

Stop applying the product and arrange care if the skin becomes very painful, swollen, blistered, weepy, deeply cracked, or shows spreading redness. Urgent help is appropriate for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading severe rash.

Book an assessment for sweating that begins suddenly, occurs across much of the body, repeatedly soaks bedding at night, or accompanies fever, chest discomfort, palpitations, unexplained weight change, weakness, or a new medicine. Those features call for assessment of the sweating itself, regardless of whether a topical product reduces moisture.

Ask whether the sweating pattern fits primary focal hyperhidrosis, whether your skin is suitable for this product, and exactly where and how often to apply it. Discuss what skin change should prompt a pause and whether prescription antiperspirant, iontophoresis, injections, or another option better matches the affected area.
