Antihistamines for an ear infection

They block histamine, which is involved in allergic reactions. They do not kill bacteria or viruses, and drying secretions does not remove infected fluid behind the eardrum.

Ear pain or pressure can arise from a middle-ear infection, an inflamed ear canal, wax, or pressure changes. Nasal allergy can also make the ears feel blocked by affecting the tube that ventilates the middle ear. An antihistamine may help accompanying itching, sneezing, or watery nasal discharge when allergy is present, but it is not routine treatment for infection itself.

Some antihistamines cause sleepiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, or difficulty passing urine. A non-drowsy label does not mean that alertness can never be affected.

Use an antihistamine only for a clear allergy reason and follow the product label or a clinician's instructions. Check the active ingredients before combining cold, cough, sleep, or allergy products because more than one may contain an antihistamine. Avoid driving if you feel drowsy, and ask a pharmacist before giving one to a child or taking one during pregnancy, breastfeeding, glaucoma, or prostate-related urinary problems.

For ear discomfort, keep the ear dry and do not insert cotton buds, drops, or objects unless a clinician has confirmed that they are suitable. A medical examination can distinguish an infected canal from a problem behind the eardrum.

Arrange prompt assessment for severe or worsening ear pain, fever with marked illness, fluid or blood from the ear, new hearing loss, dizziness, or symptoms that are not settling. Seek urgent care for swelling or redness behind the ear, the ear being pushed outward, facial weakness, severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat.

Ask what is causing the ear symptoms, whether the eardrum and ear canal look normal, and whether an antihistamine is appropriate for any allergy symptoms. Mention every medicine you take and any previous reaction to an antihistamine.
