Antifungal treatment for scalp ringworm

A medicated shampoo may be added to reduce fungal material on the scalp and limit spread, but it does not usually replace oral treatment. A clinician should confirm the diagnosis and select the medicine.

Scalp ringworm, also called tinea capitis, is a fungal infection involving the scalp and hair shafts. It commonly presents with scaling, broken hairs, bald patches, itching, or tender inflamed areas. Because the fungus extends into the hair follicle, a cream placed on the surface may leave part of the infection untreated.

Other conditions can resemble scalp ringworm. Examination and, when needed, a sample from hair or scale help separate it from dandruff, alopecia areata, eczema, or psoriasis.

Take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the planned course even if the scalp begins to look clearer. Ask whether the medicine should be taken with food, what to do after a missed dose, and whether it interacts with other medicines or supplements.

Do not share combs, brushes, hats, towels, pillowcases, or hair accessories. Clean items that contact the scalp and have household members or close contacts checked if they develop scalp scaling or hair loss. Pets with areas of fur loss also need veterinary assessment.

Seek prompt medical review for a painful boggy swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or increasing tenderness. Marked inflammation can damage hair follicles, so treatment should not wait for routine self-care to work.

Contact the prescriber if the medicine causes a troublesome rash, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal symptoms, unusually dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat.

Confirm how the diagnosis will be checked, how long the prescribed course is expected to last, and whether any monitoring is appropriate for the selected drug. Mention liver problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicine allergies, and every other medicine or supplement being taken.
