Dandruff can involve an inflammatory reaction to Malassezia yeast that normally lives on the scalp. An antifungal ingredient limits yeast growth, which can reduce the cycle of irritation, scaling, and shedding. Follow the product label or prescription, including how often to apply it and how long to leave it on before rinsing. Work shampoo into the scalp rather than only the hair, rinse thoroughly, and wash your hands afterward. Avoid the eyes and broken skin.

Do not apply extra product to make it work faster. If dryness or irritation develops, check whether the instructions allow less frequent use and discuss persistent reactions with a pharmacist or clinician. Tell them about pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, and other scalp medicines before starting a prescription product.

Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms keep returning despite correct use, spread beyond the scalp, or include marked redness, pain, crusting, drainage, or patchy hair loss. These features can point to another diagnosis or a secondary infection.

Stop the product and seek prompt advice for pronounced swelling, blistering, or a rapidly worsening rash. Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat after using a medicine.

Ask which active ingredient suits your scalp, whether to alternate it with a gentle shampoo, and what change should be expected before reassessment. If another scalp treatment is already in use, ask how to space the products to limit irritation.
