Skin rash while taking an antidepressant

Timing alone cannot confirm the cause. The appearance and spread of the rash, other new medicines or supplements, recent illness, and symptoms elsewhere in the body help a clinician judge whether the antidepressant is involved.

A drug rash may present with widespread pink or red spots, raised itchy welts, or other patterns. However, contact dermatitis tends to follow an exposure area, atopic dermatitis often presents with itchy dry patches, and heat, fungal infection, scabies, or psoriasis can produce their own characteristic distributions.

Photographs taken as the eruption changes can preserve useful detail. Record when the antidepressant began, when the rash appeared, where it started, and whether fever, facial swelling, joint pain, blistering, or mouth sores occurred.

Contact the prescriber or a pharmacist promptly for individual advice, and name every prescription medicine, non-prescription product, and supplement you use. Unless emergency symptoms are present, do not abruptly stop an antidepressant without advice because sudden interruption can cause withdrawal symptoms or a return of the condition being treated.

Until reviewed, avoid adding new skin products. Use cool or lukewarm water, loose clothing, and a bland fragrance-free moisturiser if these feel comfortable. Do not take someone else's allergy medicine or apply a strong steroid to disguise a worsening eruption.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, faintness, wheezing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. These features can accompany a severe allergic reaction and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Seek urgent medical care for blistering or peeling skin, a painful widespread rash, purple areas, sores in the mouth or around the eyes, fever with a rash, or facial swelling accompanied by feeling unwell. Prompt assessment is also warranted when the eruption is spreading quickly.

Ask whether the pattern fits a drug reaction, whether the medicine should be continued, changed, or tapered, and what can safely control itching. Confirm which drug name should be documented, whether related medicines require caution, and how your mental health treatment will be supported if a change is necessary.
