Short answer

Antibiotics can treat the bacteria that cause whooping cough and reduce its spread, but they may not quickly stop an established cough.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main purpose
Treat the bacterial infection and reduce transmission to others.
Cough recovery
Coughing may continue while irritated airways gradually recover.
Household contacts
Some close contacts may need assessment even without symptoms.

The short answer

Treatment tends to have the greatest effect when started early, before repeated coughing bouts are firmly established. A clinician may still prescribe it later to help protect other people, especially babies and anyone at higher risk of severe illness.

What antibiotic treatment can and cannot do

Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is caused by bacteria. The cough can continue after antibiotics have cleared or suppressed the infection because the airways remain irritated. This means a lingering cough does not by itself show that the medicine failed.

The chosen medicine depends on age, pregnancy, allergies, other medicines, and individual health conditions. Antibiotics do not replace vaccination, and they do not treat ordinary viral coughs.

What to do during treatment

Take each dose exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber tells you to stop. Check what to do after a missed dose rather than doubling it, and report a rash, severe diarrhoea, swelling, breathing difficulty, or another suspected reaction promptly.

Limit close contact according to the clinician's instructions, cover coughs, wash hands, and avoid sharing cups or utensils. Tell the clinician about household members, pregnancy, and contact with a young baby; close contacts may need assessment for preventive antibiotics or vaccination review even if they feel well.

Rest, drink fluids in small frequent amounts, and avoid smoke or strong fumes that provoke coughing. Seek advice before using a cough medicine, particularly for a child.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent medical help for pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips or skin, severe trouble breathing, a seizure, unusual drowsiness, or inability to keep fluids down. Babies with suspected whooping cough need prompt assessment because they may have breathing pauses without a typical whoop.

Contact the treating clinician if symptoms are worsening, fever develops or persists, coughing causes repeated vomiting, or there are signs of dehydration such as very little urine or a dry mouth. Urgency is based on these warning signs, not on how common whooping cough may be.

Questions for your clinician

Ask when the person can return to nursery, school, or work; whether household contacts need preventive treatment; which side effects warrant stopping the medicine; and whether any vaccinations are due. Also confirm whether follow-up is needed if the cough continues after the course is finished.

Questions people ask

Will antibiotics stop the whooping cough immediately?

Not usually once strong coughing bouts are established. The medicine acts on the bacteria, while airway irritation can take longer to settle.

Should family members take the same antibiotic?

No. A clinician should assess each close contact and decide whether preventive treatment is appropriate based on exposure and personal risk.

Can I stop the antibiotic when I feel better?

Complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Contact them if side effects make it difficult to continue.
