Over-the-counter antibiotics for cats

Products described as natural antibiotics, medicated creams or aquarium antibiotics are not substitutes for veterinary care. Their ingredients, concentration or purity may be unsuitable, and topical products can be swallowed when a cat grooms.

The same outward sign can have several causes. Frequent trips to the litter tray may reflect urinary blockage rather than infection, while a swollen wound may need drainage as well as medicine. Antibiotics do not treat viruses, parasites, inflammation or physical obstruction.

Choosing the wrong medicine can cause toxicity, mask worsening illness or disrupt normal gut bacteria. An unsuitable dose or incomplete course may also fail to control a bacterial infection and make later treatment more difficult.

Call a veterinary clinic and describe the cat's age, symptoms, appetite, drinking, urination, current medicines and any known exposure to toxins or injuries. Keep the cat indoors, quiet and able to reach fresh water while awaiting advice.

Bring the packaging of anything already given to the appointment. If antibiotics are prescribed, follow the label precisely, finish the course unless the vet changes the plan, and never transfer the medicine to another pet. Ask before combining it with supplements or pain relief.

Go to an emergency veterinary service for difficulty breathing, collapse, seizures, severe weakness, uncontrolled bleeding, a swollen face after medication, or suspected poisoning. A cat repeatedly straining to urinate without producing urine also needs immediate assessment.

Seek prompt veterinary advice for repeated vomiting, inability to drink, deep wounds, rapidly enlarging swelling, severe pain or a marked change in responsiveness. Do not delay care while testing a shop-bought remedy.

Ask what diagnoses could explain the signs, whether a wound, urine or other sample is needed, and whether treatment must be given with food. Clarify how missed doses should be handled and which changes mean the cat needs re-examination.
