Short answer

Antibiotics can reduce appetite through nausea, stomach irritation, diarrhoea, or taste changes, while the infection itself may also suppress hunger.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can antibiotics reduce appetite?

A brief reduction in hunger can often be managed at home if you can drink, keep food down, and are otherwise improving. Do not stop a prescribed course solely because you feel less hungry; check the medicine instructions and contact the prescriber or pharmacist if the problem is troublesome.

Why appetite can change

Some antibiotics upset the stomach or alter the normal bacteria in the gut. This may leave you feeling full, queasy, bloated, or uninterested in food. An unpleasant or metallic taste can make meals less appealing. Fever, throat discomfort, fatigue, and the illness being treated can contribute as well.

Look at the timing: note whether the appetite change began before treatment, follows each dose, or comes with vomiting, abdominal pain, loose stool, mouth soreness, or a new medicine. That pattern helps a clinician distinguish a medicine effect from the underlying illness or another cause.

Ways to keep eating and drinking

Sip water regularly and try small, plain meals rather than forcing a large plate. Foods with protein and energy, such as yoghurt if tolerated, eggs, soup, rice, or a sandwich, can make a small portion more useful. Avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen nausea or indigestion.

Follow the label about taking the antibiotic with food or on an empty stomach because absorption instructions differ. A pharmacist can advise on the exact product and check whether antacids, mineral supplements, or other medicines need to be separated from the dose.

When loss of appetite needs care

Arrange prompt medical advice if you cannot drink enough, repeatedly vomit, pass very little urine, feel faint, have worsening weakness, develop significant abdominal pain, or the appetite loss persists after the infection should be improving. Watery diarrhoea that is severe, frequent, bloody, or accompanied by fever also needs assessment during or after antibiotics.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat, collapse, or a rapidly spreading rash. These can signal a serious allergic reaction rather than a routine digestive side effect.

Useful questions for your clinician

Ask whether your exact antibiotic should be taken with food, whether another medicine could be worsening nausea, and what to do if you miss or vomit a dose. Mention how much you are managing to drink, any weight change you have noticed, bowel symptoms, and whether the infection itself is getting better.

Questions people ask

Should I take my antibiotic with food if I have no appetite?

Use the directions for that specific antibiotic. Some are easier on the stomach with food, while others need an empty stomach; a pharmacist can confirm the correct approach.

Should I stop antibiotics because I am eating less?

Do not stop solely for reduced appetite without advice. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist if intake is poor, symptoms are worsening, or side effects make it difficult to continue.

Can the infection be causing the appetite loss?

Yes. Fever, inflammation, fatigue, pain, and nausea from an infection can all reduce hunger, sometimes before the first antibiotic dose.
