Short answer

Antibiotics can disturb normal gut bacteria and cause loose stools, but severe or persistent diarrhoea needs prompt medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
Repeated watery stools can cause dehydration and may need a clinical review.
Track
Note stool frequency, appearance, pain, fever, and urine output.
Avoid guessing
Check before taking bowel-slowing medicine when infection is possible.

The short answer

Mild symptoms may settle with fluids and simple food while the prescribed course continues. Frequent watery stools, blood, fever, worsening abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration can indicate a more significant bowel reaction and should not be managed by guesswork.

Why antibiotics may affect the bowel

An antibiotic targets susceptible bacteria but can also alter the community of organisms that normally lives in the intestine. This may change digestion and stool consistency. Occasionally, disruption allows a harmful bowel organism to multiply and inflame the colon; symptoms can begin during treatment or after the course has ended.

Record how often you pass stool, whether it is watery, and whether there is blood, mucus, cramping, fever, nausea, or reduced urination. Mention recent hospital care and previous antibiotic-associated bowel problems when you contact a clinician.

Managing mild symptoms safely

Take small, frequent drinks and consider an oral rehydration solution from a pharmacy if stools are repeatedly loose. Eat according to appetite, choosing foods that are easy for you to tolerate. Continue the antibiotic as directed while arranging advice unless symptoms are severe or a clinician instructs you otherwise.

Before using a medicine that slows the bowel, check with a pharmacist or doctor, especially if you have fever, blood, significant pain, or suspected infection. Such products can be unsuitable when the body needs to clear an intestinal infection. A clinician can decide whether testing or a change in antibiotic is needed.

When diarrhoea needs medical help

Seek prompt assessment for frequent watery diarrhoea, symptoms that continue or worsen, blood or black stool, fever, a swollen abdomen, or strong abdominal pain. Contact a clinician urgently if you cannot keep fluids down, pass much less urine, feel faint, become unusually drowsy, or develop a very dry mouth.

Use emergency care if you collapse, become confused, have severe breathing difficulty, or develop swelling of the face or throat. Tell the care team the antibiotic name and when the bowel changes started.

What to discuss with your doctor

Find out whether the pattern could be antibiotic-associated colitis, whether a stool sample is useful, and how to handle upcoming doses. Ask which fluids are suitable if you have kidney or heart disease and whether anyone sharing your home needs extra hygiene precautions.

Questions people ask

Can diarrhoea start after I finish an antibiotic?

Yes. Changes in gut bacteria and antibiotic-associated bowel inflammation can become noticeable after treatment ends. Report persistent or worsening watery diarrhoea and explain when you last took the antibiotic.

Should I take probiotics with an antibiotic?

Products differ in their organisms, quality, and suitability. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about the specific product, particularly if you have a weakened immune system or a serious underlying illness; probiotics do not replace hydration or assessment of red flags.
