Anti-TNF treatment for rheumatoid arthritis

Tumour necrosis factor, shortened to TNF, is an immune-system signal that helps drive inflammation. Anti-TNF medicines block that signal and are a type of biologic disease-modifying treatment. They may be considered when rheumatoid arthritis remains active despite other disease-modifying medicines. They treat the inflammatory process rather than only easing pain, and may be given by injection under the skin or through an infusion, depending on the medicine.

Before treatment, the rheumatology team checks for infections that could become active when immune activity is reduced, including tuberculosis and hepatitis. Contact your clinical team promptly for fever, persistent cough, painful urination, an infected wound, shingles-like rash or feeling acutely unwell. Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, severe chest pain or rapidly spreading rash after a dose. New neurological symptoms, marked bruising or yellowing of the eyes also warrant urgent medical assessment.
