Anti-rabies vaccine during pregnancy

Rabies is preventable after an exposure when appropriate care begins before illness develops. Human rabies vaccines used for post-exposure care do not contain live rabies virus and cannot cause rabies. When indicated, rabies immunoglobulin provides antibodies at the wound while the vaccine prompts the body to build its own response.

The plan depends on the kind of animal contact, the wound or saliva route, the animal's condition and availability, local rabies guidance, and any rabies vaccination received previously. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and plans for birth should be disclosed so care can be coordinated, but exposure management should not be postponed for a routine antenatal appointment.

Wash bites and scratches thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible. If saliva entered an eye or the mouth, rinse with clean water. Contact an emergency or urgent-care service promptly and describe the animal, location, time, wound and any available vaccination record.

Bring your antenatal medication list, allergies and any record of earlier rabies vaccination. Follow the treatment dates supplied by the clinic. If nausea, travel or another appointment makes a dose difficult, call the treating team for instructions rather than skipping it or changing the spacing yourself.

Routine vaccination before a possible future exposure is a different decision. It may be considered when work, travel or animal contact creates an ongoing risk; discuss timing and alternatives with a clinician who understands both rabies prevention and pregnancy care.

Seek prompt assessment after a skin-breaking bite or scratch, a bat contact that may have involved a bite, or saliva touching broken skin, the eyes or the mouth. Do not wait for the animal to become ill or for symptoms to appear before requesting advice.

Get emergency help for uncontrolled bleeding, serious injury, fainting, breathing trouble, swelling of the lips or tongue, or widespread hives after an injection. Fever, pus, spreading redness or escalating wound pain also needs medical review because bacterial infection requires separate attention.

Ask whether your exposure needs vaccine and immunoglobulin, how previous doses affect the schedule, and which reactions can be managed at home. Confirm that your maternity team will receive relevant treatment details and where you should attend for each remaining dose.
