Anti-rabies vaccine for cats: what people should know

A veterinarian vaccinates a cat to prevent disease in that animal and advises when boosters are due. Human post-exposure care uses vaccines made for people and may also include rabies immunoglobulin. Veterinary vaccine must never be injected into a person.

An up-to-date feline vaccination record helps clinicians and animal-health authorities evaluate an incident. They also need to know whether teeth or claws broke the skin, whether saliva touched a mucous membrane or damaged skin, how the cat is behaving, and whether it is available for safe veterinary observation.

For pet vaccination, use a licensed veterinary service, keep the certificate, and follow the veterinarian's reminder plan. If your cat misses a planned dose, contact the clinic for an updated schedule instead of restarting or giving a product yourself.

After a human bite or scratch, rinse and wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water, then seek timely medical advice. Share the cat's ownership details, vaccination certificate, current health, and location if known. Let trained services manage a stray cat; attempting capture can create another exposure.

Medical assessment should not wait when a bite punctures skin, a saliva-contaminated scratch breaks skin, or saliva reaches the eyes, mouth or an existing wound. A stray, missing, unvaccinated or unusually behaving cat adds information for the assessment but is not a reason to postpone care.

Emergency attention is appropriate for heavy bleeding, a deep facial or hand injury, weakness or numbness beyond the wound, or breathing difficulty and widespread swelling after vaccination. Separately, spreading redness, worsening pain, discharge or fever can indicate a bacterial wound infection.

Clarify whether the incident requires post-exposure vaccination, whether immunoglobulin is indicated, and whether prior human rabies vaccination changes the regimen. Ask how tetanus status and the risk of bacterial infection affect wound care, and record the exact dates and locations for any follow-up.
