Anti-rabies vaccine after a dog bite

Do not use the dog's appearance or vaccination claim as the only reason to delay care. The decision also depends on where the bite happened, whether the dog can undergo reliable observation or testing, the wound, and your previous rabies vaccination.

A clinician considers whether teeth broke the skin, whether saliva reached an existing cut or a mucous membrane, the dog's health and behaviour, and local rabies risk. A small puncture can still count as an exposure, while contact on intact skin is evaluated differently.

People who have not been vaccinated before may need vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin. The immunoglobulin is placed into and around the wound when feasible, while vaccine is injected at a separate site. Prior vaccination changes this plan, so an accurate record matters.

Rinse and wash the bite thoroughly with soap and running water, then apply an available antiseptic. Control bleeding with gentle pressure using clean material. Avoid irritating home remedies and do not tightly seal the wound before it is assessed.

Tell the clinic when and where the bite occurred, whether it was provoked, who owns the dog, and whether authorities can locate it safely. Do not attempt to catch an unfamiliar or aggressive dog yourself. Attend every vaccine visit and keep documentation of the product and dates. The clinician will also consider tetanus protection, antibiotics, and repair of deeper injuries.

Seek emergency care for uncontrolled bleeding, a deep or crushing injury, loss of feeling or movement, or a bite involving the face, head, neck, hand, genitals, or a major joint. Any possible rabies exposure warrants prompt assessment even when the mark looks minor.

Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, worsening pain, red streaks, or fever can signal wound infection. Following vaccination, breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or widespread hives requires emergency help.

Ask whether the bite meets the criteria for post-exposure treatment, whether immunoglobulin will be used, and on which dates vaccine is due. Confirm who will coordinate dog observation, what wound changes to watch for, and how previous vaccination or an immune condition affects follow-up.
