What to know about the anti-rabies shot

A clinician chooses the plan from the animal, the type and location of contact, local rabies risk, and whether the person has completed rabies vaccination before. Do not delay assessment while trying to judge the animal yourself.

Rabies vaccine prompts the body to make its own protective response. Someone who has not previously received rabies vaccination may also need rabies immunoglobulin, which supplies ready-made antibodies near the wound while the vaccine response develops. Previously vaccinated people follow a different post-exposure plan and generally do not receive immunoglobulin.

Bites are not the only relevant contact. Scratches that break skin, or saliva reaching broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth, can require assessment. Touching an animal or saliva on intact skin is handled differently.

Wash the wound immediately and thoroughly with soap and running water. Apply an available antiseptic after washing, cover loosely if needed, and obtain urgent medical assessment. Tell the clinician when and where the contact occurred, the animal species and behaviour, how the skin was affected, and whether the animal can be observed safely by the relevant authorities.

Bring any vaccination record and follow the dose dates provided by the clinic. If an appointment is missed, call promptly for a revised plan; do not restart or abandon the course on your own.

Any possible bite, skin-breaking scratch, or mucous-membrane contact with saliva from a potentially rabid mammal needs prompt professional assessment, especially when the animal is unavailable, acting unusually, or wild. Wounds to the face, head, neck, hands, or genitals also merit urgent attention because of their location.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, collapse, or widespread hives after a shot. Fever, pus, spreading redness, or escalating wound pain can indicate infection and should be assessed promptly.

Confirm whether the contact counts as a rabies exposure, whether immunoglobulin is needed, and exactly when to return. Ask how to manage soreness and what to do if travel interferes with a dose. Also mention immune suppression, pregnancy, allergies, and previous rabies shots so the clinician can tailor the plan.
