Anti-rabies care for a dog: what it means for people

The healthcare decision depends on what contact occurred, where it happened, the dog’s status, and whether the animal can be evaluated safely.

A veterinary rabies vaccine is given before exposure to build protection in the dog. Keeping the record available helps a veterinarian and health authorities determine the dog’s status after an incident.

Human post-exposure prophylaxis is a separate course of care. It may include meticulous wound management, human rabies vaccine, and rabies immunoglobulin when indicated. The plan differs for someone previously vaccinated against rabies, so disclose earlier doses even if they were received abroad.

First move away from the dog without provoking it further. Wash broken skin continuously and thoroughly with soap and running water, then cover active bleeding with a clean dressing and gentle pressure. Flush saliva from an eye or the mouth using clean water.

Contact a healthcare provider promptly and share the wound location, depth, and circumstances. If known, give the dog owner’s contact details and the vaccine information. Report a stray, missing, or strangely behaving dog through local channels instead of chasing or restraining it. Medical care should not be postponed while someone searches for paperwork.

A bite or scratch that penetrated skin, or saliva that reached broken skin, an eye, the nose, or the mouth, warrants prompt rabies risk assessment. Do not wait for the dog or the exposed person to develop symptoms.

Emergency injury assessment is appropriate for severe bleeding, a deep wound, exposed tissue, facial injury, or impaired sensation or movement. Seek further care if the area becomes hotter, redder, more swollen, increasingly painful, or starts draining, or if fever develops.

Ask whether this contact needs rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, how soon each part should be given, and how earlier vaccination affects the regimen. Check whether the wound requires closure, antibiotics, tetanus protection, or follow-up for nerve, tendon, or joint injury.
