Using anti-nausea medicine in pregnancy

A maternity clinician or pharmacist can check the active ingredient, dose, timing, and possible interactions. Products described as natural or herbal also need review, and a medicine that suited someone else may not be appropriate for you.

Pregnancy nausea ranges from a background unsettled feeling to vomiting that prevents normal eating and drinking. The clinician will distinguish manageable symptoms from dehydration or severe pregnancy sickness and may consider other causes when pain, diarrhoea, fever, urinary symptoms, or headache are present.

Treatment can involve meal and fluid changes, an anti-nausea medicine, or a combination of approaches. If the first option does not help enough, the answer is a review rather than increasing the dose independently; a different schedule or medicine may be considered.

Follow the written dose and timing, and check what to do after a missed dose or vomiting soon after taking it. Record the product name and active ingredient so another clinician does not unknowingly recommend a duplicate.

Alongside treatment, sip fluid regularly and try foods that are easy for you to tolerate. Rising from bed slowly may reduce dizziness. If the medicine causes sleepiness or blurred vision, avoid driving and tasks requiring quick reactions, then discuss the effect with the prescriber.

Contact your maternity service promptly if vomiting prevents fluids staying down, urine becomes scant or dark, you feel faint, weight is falling, or the prescribed plan is not controlling symptoms. Early assessment can identify dehydration and whether you need a different route of treatment.

Urgent help is needed for collapse, confusion, severe or localised abdominal pain, blood in vomit, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or a severe allergic reaction. Later in pregnancy, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or pain under the ribs also warrants prompt maternity assessment.

Ask how long to continue the medicine, how improvement will be judged, which side effects require contact, and whether it should be taken with food. If you use iron, vitamins, reflux remedies, or medicines for another condition, ask whether the timing should be separated.
