Heartburn medicine: choosing and using treatment

Short answer
Heartburn medicines work in different ways, so choose a product based on symptom frequency, other medicines, health conditions, and professional advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Fast relief
- Antacids and alginates may help occasional symptoms but have different actions.
- Longer control
- Acid-suppressing medicines reduce production rather than neutralising existing acid.
- Medicine check
- A pharmacist can identify duplicate ingredients and interactions.
The short answer
Antacids neutralise stomach acid, alginates form a barrier above stomach contents, and acid-suppressing medicines reduce acid production. A product for occasional burning may not be the right approach for frequent symptoms or suspected inflammation of the oesophagus.
Why heartburn happens
Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when acidic stomach contents irritate the oesophagus. Acid reflux commonly presents with heartburn, but gastritis and peptic ulcers involve different areas and may need a different evaluation. A hiatus hernia can make reflux easier to trigger.
Symptom improvement with medicine does not establish the underlying cause. The pattern matters: note whether burning follows meals, wakes you at night, occurs with swallowing, or accompanies regurgitation, nausea, or upper abdominal discomfort.
A practical treatment approach
Read the active ingredients so that you do not unintentionally combine similar products. Follow timing instructions carefully, and ask a pharmacist about spacing antacids from prescription medicines. Pregnancy, kidney disease, liver disease, swallowing problems, and regular medicines can affect which option is suitable.
Support treatment by eating smaller meals, identifying personal triggers, staying upright after food, and avoiding tight clothing around the abdomen. If symptoms cluster overnight, discuss bed positioning and meal timing with a clinician. Keep a short symptom record when attacks recur.
Do not self-treat these warning signs
Call emergency services for sudden or severe chest pressure, particularly with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or discomfort spreading to the jaw, arm, shoulder, or back. Heart problems can resemble heartburn, and medicine response is not a reliable way to tell them apart.
Seek prompt review for painful or difficult swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms that continue despite correct treatment. Recurrent reliance on over-the-counter products also warrants a medication and diagnosis review.
Questions to take to your clinician
Ask which medicine type matches your symptom pattern, how it should be timed around food and other tablets, and when to reassess. If treatment is ongoing, ask what diagnosis is being managed and whether testing or a planned dose reduction is appropriate.

Questions people ask
Can I take heartburn medicine every day?
Some treatments are prescribed for daily use, but ongoing self-treatment can hide a condition that needs assessment. Confirm the diagnosis, dose, and review point with a clinician.
Why should antacids be separated from other medicines?
Antacids can change how some medicines are absorbed. The required spacing varies, so check the product leaflet or ask a pharmacist about your exact medicines.
Does heartburn medicine prove the pain is caused by reflux?
No. Improvement may occur for several reasons and cannot exclude heart or other digestive conditions. Warning symptoms need assessment even if an antacid seems to help.
