Medicines for GERD: benefits, use, and cautions

Antacids and alginate products may help occasional symptoms quickly. Acid-suppressing medicines, including H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors, work differently and may be used when reflux is frequent or the oesophagus needs time to heal. Their instructions are not interchangeable.

GERD occurs when stomach contents repeatedly move into the oesophagus. Medicine may reduce burning, sour-tasting fluid in the mouth, and reflux-related night symptoms. A hiatus hernia, certain medicines, meal patterns, and body-weight factors can influence symptoms, so tablets are only one part of management.

Relief after an acid medicine supports an acid-related explanation but does not prove the diagnosis. Chest discomfort and cough have several possible causes, and persistent symptoms deserve assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Follow the label or prescription closely because some products work best before food while others are taken when symptoms occur. Check whether antacids need to be separated from your other medicines, since they can affect absorption. A pharmacist can review interactions and advise on a suitable formulation.

Record when symptoms occur and what you eat, drink, or do beforehand. Smaller evening meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating, reducing personal food triggers, and raising the head end of the bed may complement medicine. Do not continue or stop long-term acid suppression without discussing the reason and step-down plan with the prescriber.

Seek emergency help for new or severe chest pressure or tightness, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Do not assume these symptoms are reflux.

Arrange prompt medical review for difficulty or pain when swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, marked abdominal pain, or persistent symptoms despite correct medicine use. These features may require examination or testing for another cause.

Ask what diagnosis the medicine is treating, when to take each dose, how long the trial should last, and which side effects should trigger a change. Bring a full medicines list and ask whether treatment could be reduced once symptoms are controlled.
