Enlarged Pores: What Can Improve Their Appearance?

Short answer

Pores cannot be erased, but their visible size may be reduced by managing oil, blocked follicles, sun damage, and changes in the skin's supporting structure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

A consistent, non-irritating routine usually makes more sense than repeated squeezing or harsh scrubbing. The appropriate option depends on whether oiliness, comedonal acne, texture, or photoaging is the dominant feature.

What visible pores represent

A pore is the surface opening of a hair follicle. It can look larger when oil and dead skin collect inside, when the surrounding skin loses firmness, or when light catches uneven texture.

Acne can present with clogged follicles, blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed spots alongside prominent pores. Sun-damaged skin can show uneven tone, roughness, and reduced firmness that makes follicular openings more apparent. Visible pores alone do not identify either condition.

A realistic care plan

Cleanse gently, choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen, and resist extracting plugs with fingernails or tools. Over-cleansing can inflame the skin and make texture stand out.

Topical retinoids can help prevent clogged follicles and gradually refine texture, but they may cause dryness and irritation and are not suitable for everyone. A clinician can advise on use during pregnancy or when planning pregnancy. Microneedling may improve selected texture concerns by creating controlled skin injury, although active infection, inflamed acne, and a tendency to problematic scarring require careful assessment first.

When to get the skin checked

See a dermatologist if prominent pores occur with painful acne, persistent inflammation, scarring, or products that repeatedly cause burning and peeling. Prompt assessment is appropriate for a spot that bleeds without clear injury, fails to heal, or is changing in colour, shape, or size; those changes should not be treated as a pore problem.

Choosing treatment safely

Ask which feature is driving the texture and what degree of improvement is realistic. Before microneedling, discuss your history of pigmentation changes, cold sores, infection, scarring, and any medicines that affect healing. For a retinoid, clarify the formulation, application schedule, moisturising plan, and warning signs of excessive irritation.

Questions people ask

Can pores open and close?

Pores do not have muscles that open and close. Cleansing can remove surface oil and debris, which may make their openings look less obvious.

Does squeezing make pores smaller?

Squeezing may temporarily remove a plug but can inflame the follicle, injure the skin, and contribute to marks or scarring.

How quickly will texture improve?

Timing varies with the cause and treatment. Skin-care changes are gradual, while procedural plans may involve a series of visits and recovery between them.
