What should you know about the anti-diphtheria vaccine?

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can affect the throat and release a toxin capable of damaging the body. The vaccine teaches immune defences to recognise the toxin. It cannot clear an infection already present, so suspected diphtheria needs prompt clinical assessment and may require Antibiotic Treatment.

Protection is maintained through an age-based schedule and, for some people, later booster doses. Bring any vaccination record you have. Mention a serious previous reaction, an immune-system condition, pregnancy, or a current illness so the clinician can advise on timing and precautions.

Check your record with a GP or vaccination service and ask which dose is due. Childhood Immunisation programmes commonly include protection against diphtheria, often in combination with vaccines for other infections. Mild soreness, fatigue, or a low fever may follow an injection; follow the clinic’s advice and keep the injection site clean.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, collapse, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction after vaccination. Seek urgent assessment for a severe Sore Throat with difficulty swallowing, noisy breathing, a muffled voice, marked weakness, or a grey coating in the throat. Avoid close contact while a clinician assesses a suspected infectious illness.
