Anti-D immunoglobulin injection: what to know

Short answer

An anti-D immunoglobulin injection gives preventive antibodies to help stop RhD sensitisation during pregnancy or after an event that could mix blood.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the injection works

The injection is considered when an RhD-negative pregnant person may have been exposed to RhD-positive fetal blood cells. This can happen around birth, vaginal bleeding, abdominal trauma, pregnancy loss, or an invasive procedure. The medicine contains anti-D antibodies that remove those cells before the person's immune system develops its own lasting antibodies. Sensitisation can matter in a later pregnancy, so the recommendation is based on blood-group testing, antibody results, pregnancy details, and the event itself.

It is usually arranged by a maternity or hospital team. The route and setting depend on the local service and the product used. Tell the clinician about allergies, previous reactions, and any antibody result you have been given.

Before and after the injection

If bleeding, an injury, or a procedure occurs, contact your maternity service as soon as possible and describe what happened. Bring your pregnancy records if you attend a clinic. Do not assume that a small amount of bleeding can be managed without advice. After the injection, follow the team's instructions, keep the treatment record, and report symptoms that concern you. A blood test may later show anti-D antibodies from the injection; tell future clinicians when you received it.

When to get urgent help

Seek urgent maternity assessment for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, fever, or reduced fetal movement. Trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or widespread hives after an injection could signal a serious allergic reaction and needs emergency help. The injection does not assess or treat the cause of these symptoms.

Useful questions

Ask why the injection is recommended, how soon it should be given, whether your antibody screen changes the plan, what reactions are expected, and where the treatment will be documented. Ask whom to call if bleeding or another event happens again.
