Short answer

Anti-D immunoglobulin may be offered after miscarriage if you have RhD-negative blood, with the decision guided by pregnancy stage, bleeding, local guidance, and the type of management.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Who may need it
People with RhD-negative blood after certain pregnancy events.
Purpose
To reduce RhD sensitisation that could affect a later pregnancy.
What it does not do
Anti-D does not stop a miscarriage or control active bleeding.

Direct answer

Its purpose is to reduce the chance that your immune system forms antibodies against RhD-positive red blood cells, which could affect a later pregnancy. It does not treat the miscarriage or stop current bleeding.

Why blood group and management matter

During pregnancy loss, fetal red blood cells can enter the pregnant person's circulation. If the pregnant person is RhD negative and the fetal cells are RhD positive, antibody formation can occur. Anti-D works by clearing those cells before the immune system responds to them.

Recommendations differ according to the stage of pregnancy and whether the loss is threatened, complete, managed with medicine, or managed surgically. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may help establish the pregnancy location and what is happening, but the anti-D decision also requires your blood group and clinical details.

Steps after a suspected miscarriage

Contact your early pregnancy or emergency service and tell them if you know you are RhD negative. Bring any blood-group card or previous pregnancy records. Ask directly whether anti-D is recommended for this episode and when it should be given; timely assessment matters.

Your care may involve expectant care, Medical Management of Miscarriage, or Surgical Management of Miscarriage. The choice depends on the scan findings, bleeding, infection risk, symptoms, and your preferences. If you already received anti-D, record the date and inform the team if bleeding continues or another procedure is planned.

When urgent help is needed

Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, fainting, worsening dizziness, severe abdominal or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever, offensive vaginal discharge, or feeling very unwell. These signs may indicate major blood loss, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy and need attention regardless of whether anti-D is due.

Questions to clarify your care

Confirm your RhD blood type, whether an antibody screen has been taken, and whether your particular bleeding or procedure calls for anti-D. Ask how the miscarriage diagnosis was confirmed, which management choices remain available, and where to return if pain or bleeding increases.

Questions people ask

Does everyone need anti-D after a miscarriage?

No. It is relevant to people with RhD-negative blood, and whether it is advised also depends on pregnancy stage, bleeding, management, and the guidance followed by the treating service.

What if I do not know my blood group?

Tell the treating service. They can arrange blood-group testing and use the result alongside your clinical circumstances to decide whether anti-D is indicated.

Can anti-D confirm that a miscarriage has happened?

No. Diagnosis relies on the clinical history, assessment, and sometimes repeat hormone tests or ultrasound. Anti-D is preventive treatment for RhD sensitisation.
