Anti-acid reflux pills: choosing and taking them safely

The packet name alone may not show which group a pill belongs to. Read the active ingredient and directions, and avoid taking several branded products with overlapping ingredients.

Chewable antacid tablets can neutralise existing acid, while acid-suppressing tablets or capsules reduce acid secretion. Lower acidity can ease burning and allow an irritated oesophagus to heal, but it does not stop every episode of stomach contents moving upward. Reflux can also contribute to cough or difficulty sleeping, although those problems have many other causes. A hiatus hernia or pressure around the abdomen may affect reflux mechanics and may need broader management.

Confirm whether the tablet should be swallowed whole or chewed, and whether it belongs before or after food. Do not crush an enteric-coated or modified-release pill unless a pharmacist confirms that it is suitable. Keep antacids separated from medicines whose absorption they can disrupt, following the product instructions or professional advice. Record when burning occurs, what you ate, and which dose you used; this helps reveal whether treatment is working.

Try finishing the evening meal well before lying down, adjusting portions that reliably provoke symptoms, and raising the head end of the bed if night reflux is troublesome. Repeatedly restarting over-the-counter pills without review can mask a problem that needs diagnosis.

Seek medical review for trouble or pain when swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, anaemia, black stools, vomiting blood, or abdominal pain that persists. Sudden chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating, dizziness, or discomfort extending to the jaw or arm requires emergency help, even if you have experienced reflux before. New symptoms after starting a pill, such as facial swelling or breathing difficulty, also need urgent attention.

Take the exact product or a photo of its label to the appointment. Ask whether it interacts with your regular medicines, whether your symptom pattern calls for testing, and how to step down or stop after the intended course. If swallowing pills is difficult, ask about a safe liquid, dispersible, or alternative formulation rather than altering the tablet yourself.
