What should you know about anterior shoulder reduction techniques?

The clinician selects an approach according to the injury, muscle spasm, possible fracture, the person's comfort, and available monitoring. Forceful pulling or a home attempt can worsen bone, nerve, blood-vessel, or soft-tissue injury.

With an anterior dislocation, the top of the upper-arm bone has moved forward out of the shoulder socket. Common clinical methods use slow positioning, traction, shoulder-blade movement, or controlled rotation to relax muscle resistance and guide the joint into alignment.

Before and after reduction, the care team checks the pulse, skin sensation, and muscle function in the arm. Imaging may be needed to identify a fracture, confirm joint position, or investigate persistent pain. Sedation or other pain relief may be offered depending on the situation.

Keep the arm supported in the position that feels least painful and go promptly to an emergency service. Do not eat or drink until the clinical team advises you, because sedation or another procedure may be considered.

After successful reduction, follow the recommended sling and movement plan. Physiotherapy usually progresses from protected motion toward shoulder-blade control, range of motion, and strength; the pace depends on tissue injury, previous dislocations, and the clinician's examination.

A shoulder that looks out of place, cannot move normally, or became severely painful after a fall, collision, or sudden arm movement needs urgent assessment. Cover an open wound with a clean dressing without pressing exposed tissue back inside.

Call emergency services for a pale or cold hand, a weak or absent wrist pulse, spreading numbness, new hand weakness, heavy bleeding, or major trauma involving the head, neck, chest, or breathing. Return urgently if these signs appear after reduction.

Ask whether imaging showed a fracture or soft-tissue injury, whether nerve and circulation checks were normal, and how long to use the sling. Clarify which movements to avoid, when physiotherapy should begin, and what recurrence symptoms should trigger reassessment.
