Anterior nosebleeds: what their common location means

This location is easy to irritate and is usually reachable with firm pressure, so many episodes can be managed with correct first aid.

The nasal septum divides the nostrils. Near its front surface, small vessels sit beneath a thin lining and can bleed after nose picking, forceful blowing, minor injury, dry air, or irritation from a cold or nasal inflammation. Blood usually comes through one nostril, although it may appear on both sides or trickle into the throat.

A bleed from farther back in the nose can be harder to compress and may send more blood toward the throat. A clinician can examine the nasal cavity if the source is unclear or episodes keep returning.

Sit upright and lean forward so blood leaves through the nose rather than being swallowed. Pinch the soft, fleshy part of the nose just above the nostrils, keep the mouth open for breathing, and hold steady pressure for ten to fifteen minutes without releasing to check. Spit out blood that reaches the mouth.

Do not tilt the head back or pack the nostril with loose tissue. After bleeding stops, avoid picking or forceful blowing for the rest of the day. If you take a medicine that reduces clotting, do not stop it on your own; seek advice from the prescriber.

Get urgent help if firm pressure does not stop the bleeding after repeated attempts, the flow is heavy, breathing becomes difficult, a large amount of blood is swallowed, or the person feels faint, weak, confused, or unwell. Urgent assessment is also appropriate after a significant facial or head injury.

Arrange a routine medical review for frequent nosebleeds, easy bruising, bleeding elsewhere, persistent blockage on one side, or episodes that began after a new medicine. The clinician may check the nose, review medicines and blood pressure, and decide whether cautery, packing, or further assessment is suitable.

Ask whether dryness, inflammation, a nasal spray, an injury, or a clotting-related medicine could be contributing. You can also ask for a demonstration of where to pinch, whether a moisturising nasal product is appropriate, and what treatment would be considered if the same area bleeds again.
