Short answer

Antacids may briefly relieve acid-related burning or indigestion, but they are not suitable treatment for every type of stomach pain.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Pain described as being in the stomach may arise from the upper abdomen, bowel, gallbladder, urinary system, or another structure. Improvement after an antacid does not establish the cause, and persistent or worsening pain deserves assessment.

When an antacid may help

Antacids neutralise acid already present in the stomach. They are more likely to help a burning feeling high in the abdomen, sour-tasting fluid coming up, or discomfort linked to indigestion than sharp, localised, cramping, or lower abdominal pain.

Similar discomfort can accompany gastritis or acid reflux, while gallstones, gastroenteritis, food poisoning, bowel inflammation, and other conditions need different management. The location, timing, associated symptoms, medicines, and examination help a clinician distinguish among them.

What to do next

If symptoms are mild and familiar, check the label, follow its dose, and ask a pharmacist whether the ingredients are suitable for your age, pregnancy status, health conditions, and current medicines. Keep antacids separated from other medicines when advised because they can change absorption.

Record where the pain occurs, whether meals affect it, and whether there is vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, fever, urinary discomfort, or back pain. Stop self-treating and arrange a clinical review if pain repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or requires frequent medicine.

Warning signs that need care

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, chest pressure, or pain after a significant injury. Prompt assessment is also needed when pain occurs with persistent vomiting, marked dehydration, yellow skin or eyes, or blood in the stool.

A pregnant person with abdominal pain, bleeding, dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, contractions, or reduced fetal movement should contact maternity services urgently. Do not delay because an antacid seemed to help part of the discomfort.

Useful questions for a clinician

Ask what features suggest acid irritation, whether any current medicine could be contributing, which tests are appropriate if symptoms continue, and how long the chosen treatment should be used. Mention anti-inflammatory painkillers and any previous ulcer or gallbladder problems.

Questions people ask

Does relief from an antacid confirm acid reflux?

No. Temporary relief may occur with several kinds of upper abdominal discomfort and cannot confirm a diagnosis by itself.

Can I use more antacid if stomach pain continues?

Do not exceed the labelled dose. Continuing or recurrent pain should be reviewed so its location, pattern, associated symptoms, and likely cause can guide treatment.
