Ant bite rash: care and warning signs

The affected spot may become red, raised, itchy, sore or mildly swollen. Some ants sting as well as bite, and a small fluid-filled bump can develop. Appearance alone cannot always identify the insect or separate irritation from allergy or infection.

A local rash forms when the skin and immune system react around the bite or sting. It is generally confined to the nearby skin and itching can be prominent. Scratching may break the surface, prolong irritation and allow bacteria to enter.

A broader allergic response can present with a rash elsewhere on the body, widespread hives or swelling away from the bite. A skin infection may cause increasing warmth, pain, pus or expanding redness. A ring-shaped, scaly or persistent eruption may have another cause and deserves assessment rather than repeated bite treatment.

Move away from the insects, wash the skin with soap and water, and use a wrapped cool compress for comfort. Avoid scratching, bursting a blister or applying harsh household substances. Keep fingernails short if itching is difficult to resist.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine or a suitable topical treatment is appropriate, taking age, pregnancy, other medicines and broken skin into account. Photographing the rash in consistent light can help you notice whether its border or character is changing.

Call emergency services if breathing becomes difficult, the throat feels tight, the tongue or lips swell, you become faint or a widespread rash appears with other severe symptoms. Do not wait to see whether these signs settle.

Seek prompt clinical care for rapidly increasing swelling, worsening pain, spreading heat or redness, pus, fever, eye involvement, numerous bites, or symptoms after a bite inside the mouth. Arrange a routine review when the eruption persists, repeatedly returns or its cause remains unclear.

Ask whether the pattern fits a bite reaction, allergy, infection or another rash; which treatment is safe with your medicines; how to protect broken skin; and which specific change should trigger reassessment. Mention previous severe reactions and bring a photograph if the rash has altered.
