Another Name for Ringworm: Tinea and Tinea Corporis

Despite its everyday name, ringworm is a fungal skin infection, not an infection caused by a worm.

Tinea is the medical term used for a group of related fungal infections. A second word may identify the affected site: tinea corporis describes infection on body skin, while infections of the scalp, feet, groin, or nails have different names and may need different treatment. The word “ringworm” comes from the ring-shaped edge that some rashes develop, although a patch does not have to form a complete ring.

Keep the area clean and dry, avoid sharing towels or clothing, and wash your hands after touching it. A clinician or pharmacist can help distinguish ringworm from eczema and other rashes that can look similar. Antifungal cream is commonly considered for limited body-skin infection, but the correct product and course depend on the site. Steroid cream used alone can disguise the rash and allow the fungus to spread. Scalp, nail, widespread, or persistent infection may require prescription oral treatment.

Arrange an assessment if the rash involves the scalp, beard area, nails, face, or a large area; keeps spreading; returns; or does not improve with appropriate antifungal care. Seek prompt help for marked pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness, which can signal an additional skin infection. Earlier clinical advice is also sensible for a young infant or anyone with diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system.

Ask whether the appearance and location fit ringworm, whether a skin scraping is needed, and which antifungal form suits the affected site. You can also ask how long to continue treatment, when you may return to close-contact activities, and whether household members or pets with skin changes need assessment.
