Another name for polio: what the terms mean

Clinicians may also refer to poliovirus, which is the virus that causes the illness. A record mentioning poliomyelitis is therefore referring to polio, not a separate diagnosis.

Polio is an infectious illness caused by poliovirus. Some infections cause no obvious symptoms or a flu-like illness, while a smaller group affects the nervous system and can weaken or paralyse muscles. The word poliomyelitis is often used in medical notes, vaccination histories, and formal health information.

The term post-polio syndrome is different: it describes new muscle weakness, fatigue, or pain that can arise long after a previous polio illness. It does not mean a new poliovirus infection.

Check that your vaccination record is complete, especially before travel or if records are missing. A clinician can review your age, previous doses, destination, and health conditions to decide whether vaccination is due. Do not assume that childhood illness described only as paralysis proves immunity.

Good hand hygiene and safe food and water habits support infection prevention, but they do not replace vaccination.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden limb weakness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe neck stiffness, or rapidly worsening muscle weakness. Mention recent travel, vaccination history, and possible contact with someone who was unwell.

Arrange a routine appointment if you are unsure about your immunisation history or need advice before travel. Bring any available paper or digital vaccination records.

Ask whether your vaccination record shows complete protection, whether your travel plans change the advice, and how to replace documentation that cannot be found. If you previously had polio, ask which new weakness or breathing symptoms should prompt assessment.
