What to Know About Medicine for Dengue

A clinician may recommend paracetamol, also called acetaminophen, for fever or pain when it is suitable for you. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines unless a clinician specifically directs their use, because dengue can increase bleeding risk.

Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes. Dengue fever can present with fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, rash, or easy bruising. Treatment supports the body while the infection runs its course and helps identify complications early. Antibiotics do not treat the dengue virus.

A medical assessment may include questions about symptoms and travel, an examination, and blood tests when appropriate. Follow-up can matter because warning signs may begin as the fever settles rather than while it is highest.

Rest and drink fluids regularly. Water, oral rehydration solution, soup, or other tolerated drinks can help replace fluid losses. Take small, frequent sips if nausea makes drinking difficult, and notice whether you are passing urine normally.

Use fever or pain medicine only as directed, check combination cold-and-flu products so you do not accidentally repeat paracetamol, and tell the clinician about all medicines and supplements you take. Prevent mosquito bites with repellent, suitable clothing, and screens so mosquitoes do not pick up the virus and pass it to others.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, vomit that contains blood, black or bloody stools, breathing difficulty, unusual drowsiness or restlessness, pale or cold skin, very little urine, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down.

Do not wait for the fever to return before acting on these signs. Babies, pregnant people, older adults, and anyone with a long-term medical condition should receive individual medical advice early because fluid and medicine choices may need closer supervision.

Ask which medicine and dose are appropriate for fever, how much fluid to aim for, whether blood tests or a follow-up visit are needed, and which changes should send you directly to urgent care. Also mention pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, bleeding disorders, allergies, and medicines that affect clotting.
