It is often called trich. Infection can be present without noticeable symptoms, so a laboratory test rather than symptoms alone is needed for diagnosis.

When trichomoniasis causes symptoms in women, possible features include an unusual vaginal discharge, vulval itching or irritation, discomfort when urinating, and pain during sex. These symptoms overlap with other vaginal and urinary conditions and cannot identify the cause by themselves.

The parasite can pass through sexual contact involving infected genital fluids. A person who feels well can still transmit it. Toilets and casual everyday contact are not the usual route of spread.

Arrange testing through a sexual health service or clinician if you have symptoms, a partner has been diagnosed, or you are concerned about exposure. Testing may use a vaginal swab or urine sample. The clinician may also recommend tests for other sexually transmitted infections.

Complete the prescribed oral medicine even if symptoms improve sooner. Current sexual partners need evaluation and treatment to reduce passing the infection back and forth. Avoid sex until you and your partners have finished treatment and symptoms have resolved; condoms help lower future transmission risk.

Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, worsening lower abdominal or pelvic pain, vomiting, faintness, or bleeding that is unusual for you. These findings may point to a problem beyond uncomplicated trichomoniasis.

Contact a maternity or sexual health clinician promptly if you are pregnant and have symptoms or a confirmed result. Get emergency help for severe pain, collapse, heavy bleeding, or signs of a serious medicine allergy such as facial swelling or trouble breathing.

Ask which test will confirm the infection, how your partners can access care, when sexual contact can safely resume, and whether repeat testing is appropriate. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicine allergies, and any treatment already taken so the clinician can choose a suitable prescription.
