Understanding pre-eclampsia

It most often develops after the middle of pregnancy, though it can also appear after birth. Prompt assessment and monitoring protect both the pregnant person and baby because the condition can worsen without obvious early symptoms.

Routine antenatal visits include blood pressure measurement and urine testing because raised blood pressure and protein in urine may be detected before a person feels unwell. If results raise concern, the maternity team may repeat measurements, order blood tests, and assess the baby's growth and wellbeing with ultrasound or monitoring.

Pre-eclampsia can present with a severe headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, vomiting, or a strong feeling of being unwell. These symptoms are warning signs for urgent assessment; they do not confirm the diagnosis by themselves.

Attend every recommended pregnancy appointment and follow the maternity team's plan for home blood pressure readings, medicines, blood tests, scans, or hospital review. Treatment may include medicine to lower blood pressure and, when needed, medicine to reduce seizure risk. Do not stop prescribed treatment because a reading improves unless the team advises it.

Birth is the definitive way to resolve the pregnancy-related cause, but timing and method depend on disease severity, gestational stage, the baby's condition, and the parent's health. The plan may involve induction of labour or caesarean birth after an individual discussion of benefits and risks. Monitoring continues after delivery because symptoms and high blood pressure can persist or first emerge postpartum.

Contact your maternity unit immediately if you are pregnant or recently gave birth and develop a severe or persistent headache, visual disturbance, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, confusion, seizure, or a marked reduction in your baby's movements. Do not wait for the next routine appointment.

Call local emergency services for a seizure, collapse, severe breathing difficulty, or inability to travel safely. If you have a home blood pressure threshold from your maternity team, follow their specific action instructions.

Ask which findings support the diagnosis, how often you and the baby need monitoring, what changes would prompt hospital admission or birth, and whom to call outside clinic hours. After delivery, clarify how long blood pressure checks and medicines should continue and which postpartum symptoms require urgent reassessment.
