Ano ang hepa A? Understanding hepatitis A

Short answer
Hepa A means hepatitis A, a contagious viral liver infection that usually spreads through contaminated food, water, or hands.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main route
- Contaminated food, water, hands, or close contact
- Long-term infection
- Hepatitis A does not become chronic
- Diagnosis
- Blood testing identifies the virus and checks liver function
What does hepa A mean?
Possible symptoms include tiredness, poor appetite, nausea, abdominal discomfort, fever, dark urine, pale stools, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. Some infected people have mild symptoms or none, yet they can still pass the virus to others.
How the infection behaves
The virus inflames the liver and is passed mainly when tiny traces of infected stool reach another person's mouth. This can happen through unsafe food or water, inadequate handwashing, or close household contact. Hepatitis A does not become a long-term infection, although fatigue and appetite changes can continue while the liver recovers.
Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are different infections. Hepatitis B is mainly spread through blood and certain body fluids and can persist long term; testing and vaccination advice are therefore specific to the virus involved.
Care and preventing spread
Arrange a medical assessment if hepatitis is suspected because symptoms alone cannot identify the virus. Care for uncomplicated hepatitis A focuses on rest, fluids, tolerable meals, and avoiding alcohol. Check before taking paracetamol, herbal products, supplements, or other medicines because an inflamed liver may process them differently.
Wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before preparing food. Do not prepare meals for others while infectious, and do not share items that may be contaminated. A clinician can advise whether close contacts need prompt hepatitis A vaccination or another preventive treatment.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent care for confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. These signs can indicate dehydration or impaired liver function and should not be managed at home.
Contact a clinician promptly for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or suspected exposure, particularly during pregnancy or when another liver condition is present. Blood tests can confirm the cause and assess how the liver is working.
What to discuss with your clinician
Ask which blood test distinguishes hepatitis A from other causes, how long to avoid preparing food or close-contact activities, and which medicines to pause. Also ask whether household members or recent close contacts need preventive care.

Questions people ask
Is hepa A the same as hepatitis B?
No. They are caused by different viruses, spread in different ways, and need different follow-up. A blood test can identify which infection is present.
Can antibiotics treat hepatitis A?
No. Antibiotics act against bacteria, not the hepatitis A virus. Most care supports hydration, nutrition, comfort, and monitoring while the liver recovers.
Can hepatitis A be prevented?
Vaccination, careful hand hygiene, and safe food and water practices reduce the risk. A clinician can advise promptly after a known exposure.
