Ano ang diverticulitis? A clear guide

Short answer
Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection affecting small pouches in the bowel wall, often causing steady lower abdominal pain, fever, nausea, or a change in bowel habits.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Direct answer
A medical assessment is advisable because similar pain can have other causes. Care depends on how unwell the person is and may include temporary diet changes, pain relief, observation, or antibiotics when a clinician finds they are appropriate.
What is happening in diverticulitis
Diverticula are small outward pouches that can form in the lining of the large bowel. Having the pouches is called diverticulosis; diverticulitis describes a pouch becoming inflamed, sometimes with infection. Pain is commonly felt on the lower left side, although its location can vary.
Constipation or diarrhoea, bloating, reduced appetite, nausea, and fever may accompany the pain. Examination helps distinguish a mild episode from complications such as an abscess, blockage, perforation, or inflammation spreading within the abdomen.
Steps after symptoms begin
Arrange a same-day medical review for new persistent abdominal pain, especially when fever or bowel changes occur. Until assessed, drink enough fluid if you can and choose food according to tolerance. Do not start leftover antibiotics, laxatives, or anti-inflammatory painkillers without clinical advice.
Once the acute symptoms settle, the clinician may guide a gradual return to the usual diet. Longer-term advice can include fibre and hydration, but changing fibre during a painful flare should be personalised rather than automatic.
Signs that need urgent care
Seek urgent assessment for severe or rapidly increasing pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, blood in the stool, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine.
Prompt review is also appropriate when fever persists, prescribed treatment is not helping, or drinking and eating are becoming difficult. People with weakened immunity or significant medical conditions should mention this when arranging care.
Questions for your doctor
Useful questions include whether another cause of pain needs exclusion, whether imaging or blood tests are needed, what to eat during recovery, which pain relief is suitable, and when to return for review. Ask about preventing constipation and whether follow-up examination of the bowel is appropriate after recovery.

Questions people ask
Is diverticulitis the same as diverticulosis?
No. Diverticulosis means bowel pouches are present; diverticulitis means one or more have become inflamed and may also be infected.
Does every episode require antibiotics?
No. The decision depends on symptom severity, examination findings, complications, and personal health factors. A clinician should decide whether antibiotics are suitable.
Should I add fibre during a painful flare?
Not without individual guidance. Food choices may be adjusted temporarily during an acute episode, with fibre reintroduced or changed as recovery progresses.
